Kings hold off ‘Hawks, 5-3

June 13, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Simon Williams hit two home runs for Kalamazoo, and the Kings held off a late Rockford rally to beat the RiverHawks, 5-3, on Friday.

Rockford lost its sixth consecutive home game, in front of a standing room-only crowd of 3,629 at Road Ranger Stadium.

Williams was 4-for-5. He and Matt Hudgins hit back-to-back, two-out home runs in the eighth to give Kalamazoo three insurance runs. The RiverHawks rallied for two in the bottom of the inning, but left the tying runs in scoring position.

Kalamazoo never trailed. Hudgins hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning and Williams led off the fourth with a home run to left field. Jono Brooks put Rockford on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.

In the eighth, Williams homered with a man aboard and Hudgins made the score 5-1 with his sixth home run of the season.

In the bottom of the inning, Brad Dutton doubled in a run and scored on Jason James’ RBI single. Greg Burrows followed with a double to drive starter Jeff Long (2-2) from the game. Dan Baerlocher relieved and got the Kings out of the eighth with the lead intact. Brandon Parillo pitched a perfect ninth for his league-leading ninth save.

Jim Paduch (2-2) gave up two runs on six hits over seven innings and took the loss.

The RiverHawks host the Kings at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. The game is preceded by the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest, which starts at 4 p.m. The traveling event features a minor-league baseball museum and baseball skills games for all ages. Fans can get their face on a baseball card or magazine cover.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season.
