« Back

October 12, 2006 - Evansville and River City will have new managers for 2007.

Pennant-winning Greg Jelksis out in Evansville, replaced by Jeff Pohl. Veteran Frontier League manager Randy Martz was fired and replaced by Toby Rumfield.

The Otters, who beat the RiverHawks in the first round of the playoffs and went on to sweep Chillicothe for the title, did not renew Jelks' contract, according to the Evansville Courier & Press. Jelks took the Otters to the FL finals four times in five years as manager. The RiverHawks swept Evansville in the 2004 championship series.

Pohl was promoted from pitching coach, the position he had held since 2002.

Martz, who pitched for the Chicago Cubs in 1980-82 and the White Sox in 1983, had been on the coaching staff in River City since 2000. He was promoted from pitching coach to manager late in the 2003 season. The Rascals finished last in the Frontier League West this year.

Rumfield spent 13 seasons in the minor leagues as a catcher. In 2004, he managed the San Angelo Colts, then of the Central League. He has spent the past two years as an area scout for the Kansas City Royals.
